I arrived in Abu Dhabi on my New York flight around 8 PM local time. It was a good uneventful flight. Abu Dhabi airport is not big. It’s not my favorite airport to transit. The design and floor map don’t make it easy to navigate around. The low ceiling makes it feel a bit claustrophobic.
Since I already had my boarding pass, I headed to the transit hall and re-cleared the security. I noticed that my passport book has something in it that always makes the metal detector go off. Because of this, I had a really good pat down – front and back. But it was not the first time and certainly wouldn’t be the last time. The officer was nice and respectful.
Once cleared, I proceeded to the Etihad Business Class lounge. Unlike the lounge at JFK, this one is not that nice. It was crowded, dark, and just didn’t look very “blingy”. I reserved a shower before grabbing a quick dinner. There was a waitlist for the shower, so I went ahead and had dinner. The buffet spread was decent. It offered selections of hot meals, salad bar, and dessert station.

The lounge experience wasn’t memorable, so I walked around the terminal to kill time. Around 1:30 AM, I decided to walk over to the gate. At this point, I was exhausted. The boarding didn’t begin until around 2 AM. For this flight, it was a bus gate. There were separate buses for business class and economy passengers.
I don’t know about most of you, but I love a bus gate and boarding through the stairs. It’s just the inner AvGeek side of me. Once onboard, the flight attendant came to introduce himself and offered a drink. I had a glass of orange juice. The amenity kit provided on this flight was basic. It consisted of an eye mask and socks.
In just 25 minutes, boarding completed. Though for some reason we were delayed a little bit. Twenty minutes past the scheduled departure time, we finally pushed back. We taxied to the runway and rolled.
My body clock didn’t recognize it was 2 AM. I was exhausted but not sleepy. I tried to sleep, but I couldn’t. So I decided to order breakfast. The breakfast consisted of the omelet as a main course. It came with a side of yogurt served along with selections of bread.
There was a round bread with some minced beef filling, sprinkled with sumac on top. I don’t know what it is, but it was delicious!
The omelet was good as well, but the hash brown was a little soggy. I ordered a cappuccino with my breakfast. It was good.
After breakfast, I decided to recline and watch a movie. We descended into Cairo and arrived ahead of schedule despite the delay.
It was a good flight. The flight attendant was friendly and professional. Even though this aircraft was not configured with lie-flat seats, the seats were comfortable. All in all, it was a nice 3-hour journey between Abu Dhabi and Cairo. I will not hesitate flying Etihad short-haul again.
