We spent a total of a week on the island of Bali. We thought the best way to nurse our jetlags is by spending the first few days in Ubud to relax and rejuvenate, and spend the remainder of our vacation on the beach.

Planning for hotel accommodations was a no-brainer as we knew we were gonna stay at Ubud Dedari Villas in Ubud which was reviewed extensively here, and at one of the several properties belonging to the World of Hyatt program as I am a WOH Globalist; which afforded us extra benefits such as suite upgrade, complimentary breakfast and hors d’oeuvres and late check-out. At the time we planned for this trip, Alila Hotels, which own several properties became integrated to the WOH program.
In the end, we decided to stay at the Hyatt Regency Bali as we were eager to visit the newly renovated hotel after being closed for five years, which I will cover in a future post.
The Ubud Dedari Villas is located in the heart of Banjar Lebah; a small village in Ubud. It is a little off the path east of the downtown area, and within walking distance from Goa Gajah.
The trade-off is the peaceful and tranquil environment that you wouldn’t otherwise experience in Ubud center. The hotel also provides regularly scheduled shuttle service to take you to and from Ubud center on schedule. There are great restaurants nearby, and on one afternoon when we didn’t feel like going anywhere, we asked the hotel staff to come and fetch us babi guling from a local market, which was out of this world!
When we were planning for this trip, we told ourselves that we would be eating local or Indonesian food throughout our stay in Indonesia, and we kept our word.
The hotel happily recommended several places to eat, including Janggar Ulam, a nearby restaurant that is located in the middle of a paddy field, and Warung Mak Beng, a local eatery specializing in fish head soup that just recently opened a branch in Ubud.
We also tried street foods such as Sate Kambing, Sate Ayam, Gule, Martabak and various local snacks.
On the following day, we rented a scooter from the hotel for $7 for the day. We ventured out on our own to Gunung Kawi and Tirta Empul — both were easily accessible within a half hour ride from the hotel.
Riding a scooter in a midst of Bali traffic can be daunting, especially to those who might not be used to driving on the left side of the street. However, we managed to explore and return unscathed. Just remember to wear the helmet at all times, or else you may be fined by the traffic police.
At night, we took a little walk in Ubud and attended the Kecak Dance. It is a dance show that illustrates an episode from the Ramayana epics. If you have not ever been, I highly recommend attending one!
We also had a chance to visit Uluwatu, a temple sitting on a cliff on the southern tip of the island; as well as Tanah Lot — a popular temple that sits on a rock formation that you may have already seen on pictures.
Bali always has a special place in my heart. I’ve always had a great time whenever I visited Bali in the past, and this trip was no exception. While I was able to visit and see everything, I was glad to be able to spend a week in the motherland. I look forward to returning in the very near future!
